In a perfect world, everything would be crystal clear, right? Humans, we like things to be coherent. We’d always know what’s what, especially when it comes to doing good. But reality throws some curveballs. Take my childhood in southern Italy, for example.

I had a close encounter with someone running a shady operation, scamming folks out of their hard-earned cash meant for charity. It made me question how many charities were plain and simply fake, both in Italy and across the world. Luckily, the authorities stepped in eventually, but it made me wary about where my donations go. Research is now a must.

Sure, donating to good causes seems like a no-brainer to many. But not everyone sees it that way. Some think it’s the government’s job, not ours. And there are valid worries about funds getting mishandled, organizations being shady about their finances, and not knowing how our money’s really being used. That’s why it’s crucial to do your homework, pick charities with transparent practices, and hold them accountable.

After all, charity and the world of donations aren’t as simple as some of us may think, you know?

But this isn’t a lecture to guilt-trip you into giving. It’s just a little article exploring some of the corners of this world…
